The treatment of thyroid nodules by percutaneous radiofrequency ablation consists of the vaporization by high temperature (60-100ºC) of these nodules, by means of a radiofrequency probe inserted inside the nodule (using a special needle). In this way, its growth is slowed down, its volume decreases progressively (60-80% in 1 year) and the possible existing compressive symptoms disappear.
It is a valid alternative in non-surgical cases of benign nodules, but is not recommended in large nodules with intrathoracic extension.
The procedure is performed in an interventional radiology room, prepared specifically for this practice, under an outpatient regime, without the need for hospitalization and being able to perform a normal life after hospital discharge.
